The Kingston City Council has been looking on a way to honour the musical act.
After suggestions to rename the city’s Barrack St. after the band were met with resistance because of the significance of the street to Kingston’s military history, the issue came to a head Tuesday night at Kingston City Council. In a 7-6 vote, councillors voted to rename a portion of the street by the city’s downtown stadium, the K-Rock Centre, the “Tragically Hip Way.”
Some might consider it “Little Bones” for the Canadian band, whose every album has reached platinum sales status in Canada, but Kingston City Council had a heated debate over paying tribute to the city’s military history versus honouring the beloved band.
In addition to naming one of Barrack St.’s four blocks after the band, council also decided to look into establishing a walk of fame.
The spirited discussion in Kingston City Council also included some practical concerns. Considering it is very much a University town, Coun. Kevin George, who supported the renaming, suggested the city “keeping a good stock of the signs” because he expected students to pilfer them to decorate their dorm rooms.
